Understanding Hong Kong’s Geography
Staying in Sheung Wan was my first time staying on the Island side of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is made up of several distinct areas, including smaller islands like Lamma Island and larger ones like Lantau Island (where you’ll find Ngong Ping 360, Hong Kong Disneyland, and the airport).
There’s also Hong Kong Island (the more global area where you’ll find Western restaurants and expats), Kowloon (known for street markets and lots of local food), and the New Territories (mostly residential). Kowloon and the New Territories are attached to China, and Kowloon is the area I’ve stayed in for every visit.
Why We Chose This Sheung Wan Hong Kong Hotel
When my mom and I planned out this trip, we decided to split it into two: a couple of nights near Central on Hong Kong Island, and a few nights at our favorite hotel in Kowloon.
After looking at many hotels, we ultimately booked a room at Ibis Hong Kong Central & Sheung Wan. The hotel is located right in the neighborhood of Sheung Wan, one I hadn’t spent much time in before.
This is a great option if you’re looking for where to stay in Sheung Wan that’s close to Central and major transportation (more than one MTR station).
Ibis Hong Kong Central & Sheung Wan Hotel Review
Ultimately, we were really happy with our stay. The room was modern and clean, with a stunning view of Victoria Harbour (and the soon-to-be-retiring Symphony of Lights). The service from the front desk, the restaurant, and especially housekeeping was great.
Compared to other Hong Kong Island hotels, this one felt like a solid value. The location was also fairly close to two MTR stations (about 10 minutes’ walking distance).
Room Size & Comfort
The room at was quite small; however, we expected this. We’re used to tiny rooms in Hong Kong and often don’t spend much time in them.
We fully expected to be in the room more on this trip, since my mom would need more time to rest. The beds were comfortable and firm; however, the hotel does offer mattress toppers if you need something softer, which was a nice touch.
Food & Dining Around Sheung Wan
Our one gripe was that the location was quieter than we expected; however, there was still plenty around, like restaurants, pharmacies, bakeries, and lots of herbal shops.
We didn’t LOVE the food we tried that was to the west of the hotel, but the food a bit south and to the east was great. We tried a claypot restaurant the first night, and the service was pretty bad, and the food was just okay. Don’t believe what everyone says about eating where the locals eat—just like in America, sometimes the locals have bad taste. This place was a local spot, and it was just meh. I was starving, though, so I scarfed my food down like a psycho.
Best Restaurants Near Our Sheung Wan Hotel
On that note, we found an awesome cha chaan teng called Lung Kee with great service in the opposite direction. The restaurant had a massive selection of Chinese items and some Western-style items like club sandwiches (a common Hong Kong staple and a favorite of ours). My noodles were fresh, tasty, and perfect. Our server was outstanding, and the prices were pretty good.
We also loved Chicken Egg Boy, which has gone viral on social media and often has long lines. We got lucky and went right before closing, when they were still making egg waffles fresh with the pineapple bun topping. Great service too.

Morning Food Options
There also wasn’t a whole lot open super early in the morning, so if you’re going to be up early, have snacks in the room and try to relax before the hotel breakfast buffet opens at 6:30 AM.
We tried a small congee place on our first morning (mixed reviews online). It was another local spot that honestly wasn’t worth recommending, as the service was abysmal. We did manage to check off a few items on our food list during this portion of the stay.
Hotel Breakfast Review
On that note, we really enjoyed the variety at the breakfast buffet. It was a good deal for $100 HKD (about $12 USD).
There was a good selection of Western-style breakfast items (bacon, eggs, hash browns, yogurt, orange juice) and a variety of Eastern items, too (congee, soy milk, cheung fun, spring rolls). It’s a great choice if you’re hungry but not ready to start your day outside the hotel yet.
Is This the Best Sheung Wan Hong Kong Hotel?
Overall, we were quite satisfied with our stay at this Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, hotel. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-organized. I would definitely consider staying here again to explore Sheung Wan.
If you’re looking for something on the Island side that’s close to transportation (the Ding Ding tram stop was close by, too), the location is outstanding.
